Life Before Work: My Experience

Back in August, I had an opportunity to join a travel company called Life Before Work on their YachtLife Mediterranean tour through Turkey and Greece. This summer was physically and emotionally draining after a fall out with a good friend and from my hospitality management career. Ironically, the week previous to receiving an invitation to join the trip, I was literally researching "how to work on a yacht in Greece" on Google, desperate to leave my then unhappiness behind. YachtLife could not have happened at a better time.

This post is sponsored by Life Before Work but all opinions are 100% my own.

Allow me to set the scene.

Upon my first entry onto the boat, I was instantly picked up off my feet into a great bear hug from a man sporting a blonde curly afro as his voice sang, "welcome to the LBW fam." I could only assume he would be our tour guide. As I move around the boat, I'm introduced to the characters who will create this experience - a scuba diving instructor from Thailand who exclusively wore a dinosaur onesie the entire trip, a tall shaggy brunette with half of his eyebrows shaved off; there were Aussies, Canadians, Americans, Mexicans, and Brazilians - from all corners of the world and various walks of life.

How to dino-SOAR!

The days were filled with sailing the open seas with swim stops in private bays and exploring the islands. On Kos, we visited Therma, a natural salt water hot spring, caused some mischief at a nearby waterpark, and rented jet-skis at a local beach. On the colorful island of Symi, we toured the island via moped and ATV and got lost in the neighborhoods. On Nisyros, we shotgunned beers in the middle of a volcano crater. On board the yacht, we filmed a music video to 21 Pilot's "Ride" and woke people up during their naps with surprise Smirnoff Ices. We explored ancient ruins and castles, devoured the cuisine (Gyros! Fresh seafood! TOMATOES!), and enjoyed each others company.

The nights were filled with parties on land where we all chipped in for bottle service or theme parties on the boat where we partied under the stars from sunset to sunrise with our own resident DJ. Together, we laughed and cried, sang and danced, and did the craziest things.

It was in-between all the mischief where we could find those moments of vulnerable connection. The reason we travel is to connect with the world around us, to clear our heads from the noise in our normal lifestyle, to gain a fresh perspective. The talks we had were on a whole other level. We skipped the ice breaker stage talk of favorite movie this and favorite color that. We broke through the surface and got to the heart and soul of who we are, who we want to be, and how we view the world around us.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I decided to join Life Before Work's YachtLife, but what I found was priceless. I found good music in beautiful places with incredible people. What I found was people who refueled me, who challenged me, and who supported me. I learned happiness is found in the small moments - when you take a break from dancing on a yacht in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and look up into a panoramic sky full of stars and all you can think about is how incredible life is.

With Love,
Ashliegh
