Vacationing at Chincoteague Island was incredibly relaxing! We experienced near perfect weather all week and I was able to catch up on some well-needed reading. I was able to read not one, but two books while on vacation! Claudia Welch's Sorority Sisters and Anita Loos's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes were great beach reads.
This was my first time to a beach since studying abroad in Costa Rica. It's interesting how the beach environments differed! Chincoteague Island is a beautiful relaxing vacation spot where you can lay out on the sand with a good read without anyone bothering you all day. The beaches in Costa Rica are some of the most beautiful places I will ever see, and while beautiful, they are a better vacation spot for the fast-paced adventure seekers.
While on the island, we stayed at a beach house that overlooked the marsh and had a phenomenal view of the island's lighthouse! Throughout the trip, Christian and his dad kept calling the marsh "swamps" and obviously didn't see the difference between the two even after Christian's mom and I attempted to explain the difference. So the marshlands/wetlands/swamp just became a running inside joke over the course of the trip.
Christian rep'd his American pride all week with his various Rowdy Gentleman tank tops, though it seems he was always wearing his American flag tank when the camera came out (I promise he wore other clothes...). Chincoteague Island is well-known for their Annual Pony Penning and Pony Swim. The island has a wide variety of wild life, including wild ponies. The volunteer fire department manages the wild life and the federal government dictates how many ponies the island can have at a time. In order to manage the number of ponies on the island, the fire department hosts the pony penning and pony swim (this year was the 88th annual event).
After the pony's swim through the channel running through the island, there is a pony auction. Something I found interesting was that the first foal to make it to shore is named King or Queen Neptune. This pony is the cheapest buy. While everyone is waiting for the ponies to make it to shore, there are raffle tickets sold for $1 per ticket. The winning ticket wins King or Queen Neptune! The photo of the red smoke (below) marked the start of the pony swim.
Are you ready to hear an embarrassing story? Yeah? I thought so.
There I am just sitting in my beach chair reading Gentlemen Prefer Blondes minding my own business. Then I hear/feel a splat on my arm and leg. I look down. HOOOOOOLLLLY CRAP (quite literally). Next thing you know, I screaming and flapping my arms about. "What do I do?! what do I do?!"as I am running towards the cold ocean water. Now, if you know me, you know that I am very good at causing a scene. Everyone in the 50 foot radius (at least) is staring at me and laughing. A bird pooped all over me. So embarrassing.
Apparently this situation means good luck though.
Where do you vacation, Darlings?
