Fitness Friday: Favorite Workout Videos

Health and fitness have always been important to me. In high school I learned running wasn't my thing when I tried to join the track and field team. Instead, I was involved in the marching band as a majorette which gave me pretty stellar arms and from there I also began taking classes in ballet/pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, and lyrical. Now that I am in college and not involved in extracurriculars that are as physical, I keep in shape through some of my favorite workout videos and going on walks around campus. I love workout videos because they give you instruction on which moves to do when and the instructors are usually motivating and let you know how many reps to do.

My all-time favorite workouts come from Beachbody. I love Tony Horton's P90X program and Chalene Johnson's ChaLEAN Extreme program. These workouts are intense and you see results quick and are well worth the investment. Another great thing about Beachbody programs is that you can connect with a Beachbody Coach to keep you motivated. These coaches often set up monthly Facebook groups where you focus completely on your personal health and fitness for one month and are held accountable to the rest of the group. My coach, Jessie, is incredibly inspiring and so motivating and keeps me on track to win the swimsuit award at my next pageant competition!

On my days off from the Beachbody programs, I still stay active. Sometimes I'll do workout videos found on Youtube!

My favorite Youtube workout videos come from Cassey Ho, creator of Blogilates, a fun blog with healthy cooking tips and workouts! Cassey keeps her viewers working hard through creating workouts based off of pop songs! She also put together a lot of different programs you can follow such as the Victoria's Secret Series, Bikini Blaster Series, HIITilates Series among others! If you're looking for a fun workout, definitely check out her Youtube channel! She also created her own line of workout apparel!

Get your tennis shoes on, ladies, it's time to work out!

Cassey's newest "challenge" is to PSY's "Gentleman"

Gluten-Free Cheesecake Recipe

This is the perfect cheesecake for summer. Normally, cheesecakes are too heavy for a summertime treat but this one is so light! It just melts in your mouth! You gotta try this for your next backyard bash this summer!

Montana Mom's Dynamic Cheesecake
Found in the Moosewood Cookbook

Prep time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 25 minutes, cooling period, then 8 minutes more
Makes 8-10 servings

Tips: Make this a day ahead so it will have plenty of time to set. Use a food processor or blender to make the graham cracker crumbs.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2 cups of graham cracker crumbs (use gluten-free crackers)
1/2 stick of butter or margarine, melted

Combine then press firmly into the bottom of a 10-inch springform pan.

16 oz (2 packages) cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar (organic!)
4 eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3 tbs lemon juice (right from the lemon!)
1/2 tsp lemon rind (right from the lemon!)

Beat all filling ingredients together until smooth.
Pour onto crust and bake for 25 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven and cool to room temperature. You will need the oven again, so you can leave it on, or reheat it.

1 cup sour cream
3 tbs sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Blend topping ingredients well and pour on top of cooled cake.
Bake for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and cool to room temperature.
Then, cover tightly (still in the pan) and chill at least 12 hours.

Top with your favorite fruits and enjoy!

Would you try this recipe? What's your favorite cake recipe?

Happy Memorial Day!

Top: old
White Jeans: Michael Kors at Marshall's
Shoes: Sperry Top-Siders
Necklace: Charlotte Russe

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Memorial Day always marks the start of summer. Classes are always out by now, family and friends are chillin' on your back porch waiting for the BBQ'd food to be finished, there's a parade happening on the main road of your small town...

But first, let's remember why we celebrate this day. Thank you to all the brave men and women who have served and are currently serving our great country. Your bravery has aided in the protection of America's safety and freedom. I salute to you courageous men and women who serve in our national defense.

So before we eat our BBQ'd food and watch parade floats go by on the streets, lets say a prayer for those honorable men and women who serve our country. God bless, America.

Vitamins for Acne Treatment

Remember when you were little and your mom would say, "take your vitamins!" She would then force feed a chalk-flavored pill down your throat? Ugh. Thankfully, there were those Flintstone Vitamins every once in a while!

Well, now that I've entered my 20's and left my childhood vitamins behind, I've upgraded to adult vitamins. I like to be as all-natural and organic as possible and feel this is the best and safest way to get the nutrients I need. Here are two supplements I take, other than a daily women's vitamin, that work well for women, particularly in the treatment of acne!

1. Biotin - I started taking this in high school for hair, nail, and skin support! Back in the day, my hair used to be very thin and now, though still fine in texture, has thickened. My nails are strong and very rarely ever break. Unfortunately, acne runs in my family well into the adult years. Biotin definitely attributed to clearing up my skin since high school, however, I doubt I'll ever be fully rid of acne. Read more about biotin here.

2. Evening Primrose Oil - Along the lines of biotin's use for treating acne, I also take evening primrose oil. Evening primrose oil can be used to treat many things such as menopause and PMS, acne and rosacea, even arthritis! Learn more about evening primrose oil here.

Do you take supplements?

Fashion Week Cleveland Model: An Interview with Allison Goodwin

Darlings, I would like to introduce you to Allison Goodwin! Besides serving as the current Miss Northwestern Ohio and preparing for the Miss Ohio 2013 pageant, Allison had the opportunity to be a model for Fashion Week Cleveland this past weekend! How totally exciting and cool is that?!

Allison after the show!
I know Allison from competing with her in Miss Ohio locals. She is great to be around backstage and was one of my first pageant friends when I started competing a few years ago. Allison is a very talented dancer and, in my opinion, always has the best gowns! Allison allowed me to interview her about her experiences at Fashion Week Cleveland!

Q: How did you get involved in Fashion Week Cleveland? What was the audition process like?
A: I always knew that Fashion Week Cleveland had existed, but had never really thought I would be able to be a model in it.  Back in February, I saw on Facebook that Fashion Week Cleveland was having a model call in March.  I figured I would go and audition just to see what would happen.  I did not think that I would make it because I am only 5’7”, had only modeled in a handful of things outside pageants, and there were over 300 girls auditioning. We had to walk the runway for 6 judges and turn in a modeling portfolio. They then told us that they would email and let us know if we made the cut for fashion week. A few weeks later I received an email saying I was selected; I was so surprised and happy when I saw that email!

The exciting email!
Q: Who did you model for? What did you model? Anything creative?
A: I was supposed to model for three designers, but only ended up modeling two on the night of the show due to a mishap with my last outfit!  The designers I modeled for were L A Gaitors and Art of Cloth.  The third was supposed to be Lotty by Lotty Lewis.  L A Gaitors is actually a brand of shoes!  All of the shoes were very creative and were all boots.  The people in charge of fashion week wanted us to really be able to show case these boots so we actually wore them on our hands to model them!  This was the opening number of the runway show. We were expected to wear all black so that the attention could be drawn to the boots.  Most of these boots had very cool designs painted on them.  Art of Cloth was clothing. I was selected to wear a pair of leggings and a cowl neck shirt that had three quarter length sleeves.  The shirt was mostly purple, with a tie dye on the bottom of it and the leggings were gray with a tie dye design on the bottom of the leggings.  All of these clothes are hand painted/ dyed!

Modeling the L A Gaitor boots on her hands! Doesn't she look just glamorous!?

Q: Tell us about your experience at Fashion Week Cleveland...
A: Fashion Week Cleveland was nothing but a positive experience.  I met a lot of amazing girls that I was so thankful to have been able to spend all day with on the day of the show.  Another perk of being in FWC is that I received a free pair of L A Gaitor boots! It was such an honor to be able to walk the runway for the third most famous fashion week in the United States taking after New York and Los Angeles fashion weeks.

Allison getting ready for the show! Pictured with another model and pageant friend, Sarah Eash, current reigning  Miss Ohio's Outstanding Teen 2013
Q: What emotions do you feel when walking the runway?
A: When walking the runway in the FWC show I felt so intense while also being excited.  As a model, you are not supposed to smile, wink or draw attention to yourself because it is all about the clothes you are modeling. When I first stepped out on the runway it was so hard not to smile because that is what I am used to doing when competing in pageants!  I was able to contain that and really show off the clothes I was wearing.  It was so great to be able to see so many hundreds of people in attendance and see their reaction to the clothes!

Allison modeling for Art of Cloth!
Isn't she just a beauty! Thank you so much for allowing me to interview you! It sounds like you an an incredible experience and I wish you the best of luck at your next big event - Miss Ohio 2013 pageant!

Surviving Finals Week 101

8 Days. 6 Papers. 3 Classes. 3 Presentations. 2 Exams. 1 Me. Here's my guide to surviving finals week!

1. Prepare your Mac - Download SelfControl App

The SelfControl App is really awesome! You can "blacklist" website that you don't want to go on for a certain time period - such as facebook, twitter, blogger, etc! There is also a "whitelist". The "whitelist" will grant you access to website only on that list and no other websites! You control the time for how long you want the app to last, as short as a half hour or block those site for a full day if you really need to focus! You can download it here!

2. Killer Playlist
Some people prefer music with no lyrics, but I'm the opposite. Here's some songs off of my playlist on Spotify used for studying! Mind you, my musical tastes are all over the place! I like a lot of slower music for studying but I also like to incorporate a few faster/louder pieces to make sure I'm not left drooling on my books, haha...
3 AM - Matchbox Twenty
All Your Life - The Band Perry
Between the Lines - Sara Bareilles
Blackout - Muse
Cavanaugh Park - Something Corporate
Clair De Lune - Claude Debussy (Yes, I do have some classical music intertwined, too :p)
Cough Syrup - Young The Giant
Dirt Road Anthem - Jason Aldean
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
Flat Top - The Goo Goo Dolls
The Four Seasons - Antonio Vivaldi
Hall of Fame - The Script
Ordinary People - John Legend
Out on the Town - Fun
The First Single - The Format

Find me on Spotify for more awesome playlists!

3. The Outfit

My cobalt blue button up and leggings are my go-to for finals week! Comfortable enough for long hours in the library but still polished enough. Boat shoes are very popular at my school and for good reason! They're preppy but still mega-comfortable! Of course, I always wear my pearls and a hair bow is a chic and easy way to keep your bangs from being a distraction!

Good luck to all who are in their finals week! May the curve be ever in your favor!

With Love,
