Holiday Baking: Jelly Doughnuts & Peppermint Bark

Hi, I'm Jenny! I blog at Sprinkles & Sundresses.

I'm a sophomore in college blogging about my life as a transfer student, and pretty much everything and anything that I feel like!

I love baking, Gilmore Girls, and anything brightly colored!

Come say hi! I'd love to meet you :)

bloglovin' -- instagram -- twitter -- pinterest

Like I said, I love to bake! I could say I love to cook, but mostly I love to bake. Desserts all the way!
Today, I'm going to share two holiday recipes that I made for my family over Thanksgivukkah!

The first recipe is for mini baked jelly doughnuts. Jelly doughnuts are a traditional Hanukkah dessert. Hanukah is all about celebrating the miracle of oil that burned for eight nights when it was only supposed to last for one. All of the traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. I made baked doughnuts rather than fried so it may defeat the traditional purposes but they were still delicious!

You can find the recipe I used here. I followed it almost exactly except for one pretty important part- the filling. The recipe calls for 1 cup of jam mixed with 1/4 cup water. Let me tell you, unless I did something wrong that I didn't realize, that is an absolutely ridiculous amount of filling. I used straight jam and I used about 1/4 cup total. The thing about baking the doughnuts instead of frying them is when they first come out of the oven they look like muffins or cupcakes. That means, you guessed it, they aren't hollow! I still managed to pipe some filling in but it was a pretty tiny amount. If anyone figures out how to fit even close to the amount of filling this recipe calls for, please let me know!

The second recipe was for a holiday favorite I know everyone loves- peppermint bark!

This one was a huge hit with my family! I used a recipe found here but peppermint bark just calls for melting and re-hardening chocolate. It's super simple. The thing about this recipe that I really liked was that rather than just white chocolate, it called for a layer of milk chocolate in between two layers of white! I opted for semi-sweet instead of milk but I'm sure it would be good either way.

I didn't let the second layer harden enough before adding the top layer of white chocolate and the semi-sweet started to melt while I was spreading the layer on! That's why it's an awkward shade of brown. It didn't affect the taste at all, I promise!

The plus side of making peppermint bark? Crushing up candy canes is actually really fun.

Let me know if you try these recipes! I'd really love to hear from you. I hope you all have wonderful holidays!

Blogger Meet Up Recap

Making new friends is probably one of my favorite things about blogging. This past weekend, I was able to spend some time with a great group of Cleveland bloggers! I had a blast chatting about our favorite blogs, tips, giveaways and sponsorships, and blog life in general! It's always great to be able to chat with other people who "get" blogging!

Bloggers who came to the Meet Up:
Jessica @ Anchored in CLE
Rachael @ Pretty in Pink

Courtney @ Permeating Purpose

Margaret @ Life After Athens

My real life blogging bestie, Rachael put together the meet up with Jessica and they did a great job! We had fun checking out the Ohio City Holiday Festival, the West Side Market and chatting over lunch!

On our walk to lunch, we passed this giant chalkboard wall! You better believe our inner bloggers were bursting at the seams! We couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a group picture in front of something so unique!

Katie, Mike, Jessica, Rachael, myself (with Kate stealing the show), Lisa, Courtney, and Meredith

you're probably wondering, "What is Ashliegh wearing under her coat!?" Don't you worry, Darling! You bet your pretty penny I did a quick outfit of the day photo shoot! I had to use this time to show off my new Kate Spade bag that I bought on Black Friday that was 75% off the original price! That's basically free!

Scarf: Gift!
Vest: Old Navy
Jeans: Old
Boots: ShoeDazzle
Bracelet: c/o Armed & Readi (similar)
Bag: Kate Spade (similar)

Have you ever gone to a blogger meet up or met with a blogger in real life?

Packing List: Cruise Vacation!

In just a few days I'll be leaving the cold winter wasteland that is Ohio and embarking on a road trip to sunny Florida! Three of my sorority sisters and I planned a cruise with Norweigian Cruise Line this past summer and it has been my light at the end of the tunnel this whole semester. This will be my very first cruise and I cannot be more excited...and nervous! I have no idea what to expect! You bet your pretty penny that I've done countless hours of research for what to wear on Pinterest!

My suitcase hidden in the depths of my closet has been beckoning to be packed. Here is my packing list for next week's trip! Did I forget anything?!

What advice do you have for a first time cruiser?

My Skin Regimen

While the worst of my acne days are over, I still have a considerable amount of acne for a 22-year-old. I've tried everything on the market to clear up this issue, and, unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever be rid of acne as it runs in my family.

For those of you who struggle with acne-prone skin, too, here are my tips for keeping my skin as clear as possible:

Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water! This assists your body in flushing out toxins and other bacteria that could be causing the issue.

Don't pick! This is the toughest one for me and its such a bad habit that I'm trying to break! Do your best to not pick at any break outs. Picking at it can actually spread the bacteria to other areas causing more break outs!

Always wash your make up off at the end of each day! Don't let all that dirt and make up settle into your pores during your skins most important hours! While you're getting your beauty sleep, your skin is hard at work rejuvenating itself; don't let it battle with the makeup, too!

Below are the products I use to keep acne away and keep my skin looking healthy!

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

Aveeno makes great noncomedongenic products that won't clog your pores. Their Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser lathers well and leaves my skin feeling fresh. A good cleanser is the base of any good skincare regimen! Every morning, I look forward to applying the Smart Essentials Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment to de-puff my sleepy eyes from the lack of sleep I get each night! The cooling roller ball feels so good on my tired eyes!

Say Yes To Tomatoes is a fantastic organic care line created specifically for acne-prone skin in mind! The Roller Ball Spot Stick offers a quick go-to product that diminishes pimples quickly. I only apply it once a day, usually at night, so it doesn't dry out my skin.

Lastly, I use Mary Kay's Botanical Effects Hydrate as my moisturizer right now. It's very light so it works well with my skin in the warmer months. Lately, it's not heavy enough for my dry winter skin as I need to apply two layers to combat the dryness. If you know of a great moisturizer, I'm on the hunt for one!

What skincare products do you use?

How to Save Money Online Shopping

As we all know, I'm all about saving money! I never pay full price for anything! Heck, I just shopped Express's Black Friday Sale early. What would have been a total of $160 at check out ended up only being $37! Here are some of the programs I use to make sure I get the most bang for my buck!

1. My mom told me about Ebates years ago and I've been using it since high school! Ebates helps you find the best coupons online and you get cash back with each purchase that saves up in your account then, every few months you'll get a check in your mailbox! It's like being paid to shop! Also, when you sign up, you get to chose a $10 gift card from select stores!

2. What's not to love about Groupon?! I often find great deals for hair cuts, manicures, spa treatments, and even restaurants and traveling! I'm actually looking at the Cancun trip for spring break right now! You can buy Groupons for yourself or give them as gifts...even use them for date night!

3. Rue La La is THE bomb dot com. You say you have that champagne taste on a cheap beer budget type style? Guess what, Rue La La offers the best of both worlds! You can get your favorite name brands for SUPER cheap. Lilly Pulitzer, Jack Rogers, Calvin Klein and other favorites...yeah, they are frequently offered for insanely low prices!

4. Student Rate focuses on putting money back into students' pockets! Many of us are online shopping anyways so make sure to check them out! Signing up for an account is free and you can get more information about Student Rate here

How do you save money when shopping online?

I am Superwoman

I've never been the emotional type. Opening up about how I feel has never come naturally to me. Some might say I come off cold or intense, perhaps even insensitive. When an unfortunate event occurs, I'm the type to always say, "I'm fine". I do my best to not cry in public and emotions make me uncomfortable. I'm the type of girl who thinks I can do it all, or damn it, I'm going to die trying. I'm strong and don't give a damn about how you feel about me. Love me or hate me, I am Superwoman.

Though lately, I don't feel like it.

I typically deal with rejection well. I've been broken up with and cheated in the past and just brush those relationships off my shoulder. I've been bullied, not just teased.

I've always enjoyed writing. When I was younger, I loved writing in diaries. I had so many of them, too. In the fourth grade I had a crush on a boy I sat next to in my language arts class. Of course, I wrote about it in my diary. I was proud of this particular journal as I had decorated it myself with clippings from my favorite magazines. I carried that diary with me everywhere, even to school in fear that my mom, or worse, my younger sisters, would read it. One day, I left my language arts class room to go to the bathroom before class started. When I returned, an unimaginable scene was happening before my eyes.

When I reentered the classroom, I had never felt so rejected in my life. The whole class was laughing at me. The boy I had a crush on was sitting on the teacher's reading stool, the teacher no where to be found. In his hand was no ordinary reading assignment. It was my diary that he had dug out of my backpack and read to the class while I was away.

I don't know how I managed it, but I didn't cry. I walked up to that boy, grabbed my diary then threw it in the trashcan. That night, I went home and threw away all of my diaries, thinking, why keep anything in my life if it just hurts me. After that day, I became absurdly shy.

Though this is just one of the instances of being bullied in my younger years, I recently heard a piece of advice that perhaps I've always believed yet couldn't put into words on my own: "If someone has a problem with you, thats their problem." This came from a woman who probably has no idea how much I look up to her. She also has my dream job.

I'm a senior in college now which means I've started my job search. I scored a phone interview with my dream job a few weeks ago. It's a job I've been working to hold since I joined my sorority my freshman year. About a week ago, I learned that I wouldn't ever hold this dream job and it's been crushing me - I'm paralyzed in a state of shock. I never expected to have the position but I also had so much hope to reach just one dream. To know all the long nights - the blood, sweat, and tears were all worth it to accomplish just one goal.

I'm not entirely sure if I should even be writing any of this on a public blog but I need to get my feelings out, even if I can't show it in person. I don't even know if I'll hit the "publish" button for this one.

I know God has a plan for me and everything happens for a reason. It's something I've learned time and time again over the past few years. I know I the job search will be hard and I'll probably be rejected from a lot of jobs but, damn. This one hurts worse than any break up or bullying I've ever experienced.

Even though it hurts, I still find a way to pull myself together. I'm sure my friends know something is up but I can't break down. I have to keep going; keep pushing through the emotions and hide them. Because I am Superwoman, and I can handle it.

What I Wore: Alpha Phi Semi Formal

Saturday night was my chapter's first real semi-formal! In the past we've had semi-formals; however, they were always on campus with no adult beverages present and they were kind of awkward. It always felt like a high school dance and, hello, we're in college now.

Right before the dance I decided to dye my hair darker and cut off 4" of its length! I found this gorgeous red high low dress at Macy's back in August and had to have it! At the time, it was $99 and we all should know by now - I don't pay full price for anything! I waited two more weeks then visited the store again. It was on sale. For $49. Next thing I knew, this baby was hanging up in my closet!

I had a ton of fun at semi-formal with Dr. Prep, his Phi Psi family, which also happened to be many of my sisters' dates, my Littles, and best friends!

Pretty good lookin' group, dontcha say?!
From left to right: Me, Christian (Dr. Prep), Harry (Meg's date, obvi), Meg (the best friend), Ethan (Dr. Prep's grand little), John (Dr. Prep's Little), and Emily (my Little)

We're only missing Christian's other Little, Jareth, my first Little (my "first born" haha!), Tricia, and my Grand little, Chelsea! Maybe one day we'll be able to get the whole family!

What did you wear or would you wear to your sorority's semi formal?

Fall Trend: Layered Statement Necklaces

Top: Old
Jeans: Old
Boots: ShoeDazzle
Necklaces: C/O Armed & Readi

Normally, I don't believe Christmas should even begin to be celebrated before December 1st. However, last week, my mom dropped off a ton of Christmas decorations at my house! I came home from classes and there was a huge green bag sitting in my living room. My roommates and I just decided to put the tree up rather than let it take up valuable real estate in a corner of the house somewhere. I love the adorable bow ornaments that adorn our tree!

You might also notice that I'm not rocking my natural blonde hair anymore! The box  I bought to dye my hair said "dark natural blonde". Well, it came out a little darker than expected but I kinda like it! It's a nice change for the winter season.

Lets move on to the important part of this post - the STELLAR jewelry I'm rocking! The girls behind Armed & Readi contacted me a few weeks ago about their jewelry company. With "high heels and big dreams" Brittany, one of the co-founders started the trendy jewelry company with one of her sorority sisters at Quinnipac University!  They sent me some gorgeous pieces including the Pearl Tassel Necklace (which I am beyond obsessed with!), Tortoise Noir Bracelet, and the two pieces pictured above!

Fortunately, I like to share with you Darlings and the Holiday collection necklace (the bottom necklace in my layered look) is up for grabs...though you'll have to pry it from my hands cause my closet is going to miss this beauty! Enter to win in the Rafflecopter below!

Which Armed & Readi piece is your favorite?

Greek Lip Sync!

As a member of a Greek organization, lip sync is one of my favorite events of  the whole year! I mean, besides recruitment...and initiation...and our awesome philanthropy events...ok, so every event we do is my favorite, but lip sync holds a special place!

At my school, the Greek lip sync is a sold out show every year and last night's show was no different! The fraternities and sororities compete in dance numbers while lip syncing. We also raise a lot of money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during the event. This year, we raised over $2,000!

It's always a lot of fun preparing for the show with my sisters! For the past few years, my best friend, Meg and I have been the "executive/creative producers" of our sorority's shows. It's a blast dancing, singing, and goofing off at rehearsals with all of my sisters! For us, its not necessarily about the trophy or winning, its all about having fun and bonding, and that we definitely did! I'm so proud of the way our show turned out and all the dedication my Alpha Phi sisters gave to our show!

This year's theme for Alpha Phi's show was "When I Grow Up...". We had different dance numbers for different careers! Watch our show in the video below! Be on the look out for me, I'll see if you can point me out (hint: I wear a crown. Duh!)

Last year's show was a modern day Disney princess theme! This was my all time favorite show that we have done in the past four years! It was so clever and I loved every moment of the whole show. I really took on my character of Rapunzel and making her a very sassy modern day princess to "Whip my Hair." You should probably check out the video below if you're a Disney lover!

Does your school's Greek Life do a lip sync performance or something similar? I would love to see the video so leave a link to it in the comments!

Sweater Weather with Livin Like Larz

I introduced you to Larissa last week and now she's back to showcase her funky fresh style! Isn't she adorable? Make sure to check out her blog and enter the giveaway below!

Snuggle up- it's gettin' chilly ! The heart of fall is a time for chunky sweaters, boots, and bell bottom jeans. I find that it can be difficult to stay stylish in midst of the temperatures, but I definitely don't consider it an excuse. A girl's gotta' get creative!
  Free People

I have an obsession with sweaters. Sweaters are hand-knit stories. Each is perfectly stitched together like a piece of art. In this look, I am rockin' one of my favorite Free People Sweaters. They have an incredible collection of sweaters from pullovers, to funky wraps, and long fringe cardigans.
  Free People

Bell Bottoms n' bootz. I love my Current/ Elliot bell bottoms. They are the most carefree style of jeans, and they go perfectly with a pair of Sam Edelman Boots. Sassy and sophisticated...oh, and I'm a major fan of the head-wrap. I love the way it looks to embellish wavy hair, a messy top-knot bun, or a funky fishtail braid. If you aren't a fan of head wraps, you can rock it as a headband. Basically I'm a huge fan of hair accessories. Shop the Look:

Jeans: Current/ Elliot
Boots: Sam Edelman
Head-wrap: Free People

Free People The Devil's in the detail. I love the little aztec bracelets stacked on my arms like a masterpiece. One of the hardest parts about an outfit is finding the perfect accessories, or pairing together what you have! I love to stack bracelets. My ideal stack would definitely include the Free People Pyrite and Stones Cuff the less expensive Hard Bangle Set , and the delicate making shapes bracelet

Shop the Look (my favorite Stacks):

Although this is my free spirit stype, I definitely have a Top Shop love. I think the ability to "flip the switch" between care free and sophisticated posh is key to style success. Each time you visit the shop, they're always on TOP. You can always count on new inventory for every type of event. In honor of my love for topshop, I am offering a $30.00 Giveaway! How to Paint Alpha Phi's Lilly Pulitzer Print

Before recruitment, we received these new 5 foot Alpha Phi letters from a sister's dad! When they arrived in our suite, they were only primed. Sarah, one of my sorority sisters, wanted to paint them the Lilly Pulitzer print and I volunteered to help her. At the time, I had no idea how to even begin painting the print but she convinced me that it was very easy. She's right! Painting a Lilly Pulitzer print might seem intimidating, but once you start, it's actually very simple!

Since painting these giant letters, I've been painting our Lilly Pulitzer inspired print on everything! I even made adorable canvas' for my Littles and a clipboard for another one of our new members! Since it's so simple, I figured I would teach you preppy Darlings how to paint Lilly inspired prints, too!

Step 1: Paint the desired area with pink paint. It doesn't really matter what the pattern looks like! It might look similar to pink camo print when you complete this first step.
Side note: Make sure to prime the area you are painting white first. This will allow the pink to be brighter and it won't take as many layers of paint to get the opaque look.

Step 2: Add details such as flowers, ivy leaves, forget-me-nots, swirls, letters, and Alpha Phi in cursive font! It's ok if you mess up because Lilly Pulitzer prints are not meant to look perfect! Use a small paint brush that you can easily control and a darker pink paint for these details.

Step 3: Add the even smaller details. Paint the center of the flowers and Alpha Phi letters with a light pink paint. Make sure to leave the outside edge of the darker pink showing through!

As you can see, it's very easy to paint! I would love to see your Lilly-inspired painted items so feel free to send photos to!

Accessory Mercado

Even though I was on fall break last weekend, I still made sure to dress up and look cute! The week before fall break, I received a package full of beautiful gems from Accessory Mercado and couldn't wait to style them while on my trip to West Virginia and Gettysburg!

Outfit #1: Football Game

Necklace: C/O Accessory Mercado
Booties: ShoeDazzle
Jacket, Tee, and Jeans are old

For this outfit, I really wanted to showoff the necklace without being too over the top. I mean, it's a football game! With the basic jeans and tee look, I was able to use the necklace and booties to dress it up just enough.

Outfit #2: Gettysburg

Necklace: C/O Accessory Mercado
Cobalt Bangle: C/O Accessory Mercado
Peplum top: Marshall's
Jeans: Macy's
Ballet Flats: Macy's
Jacket: gift from Christian

Christian surprised me with this jacket after our day at the Leesburg Outlets! It's a gorgeous leather jacket and I wear it practically everyday because it's so cute! Christian has pretty good taste.
I love the way this necklace looks with my black peplum top! The top has two gold zippers right at my waist line an the gold of the necklace was the perfect touch and the cobalt bracelet added just enough color for a fun look!

The Easiest Way to Paint Chevron

As I was making gifts for my Littles a few weeks ago, I came across this tutorial for painting chevron. A lot of tutorials for chevron painting will have you draw out a grid  or flip over backwards before you can start the chevron-ing process. Ain't nobody got time for that! After I saw this quick trick, I knew it was genius and had to share it with you darlings!

Simply cut a corner off of a piece of paper and tape around the edges! With this trick, you can space out the stripes as much or as little as you want! After you finish painting in your stripes, let the paint dry. Then, peel off the tape and BOOM! You have perfect chevron stripes! So easy, right?!

Happy Chevron-ing!

Well...That's Embarrassing!

1 // 2 // 3

I kicked off the weekend with a dinner date with Rachael yesterday! While at dinner, we discussed blogging, of course, and we got onto the subject of making friends in this crazy blogworld. Rachael mentioned that I should reply to the comments I receive on a post and I was like, wait, what?! I thought I did!?

When I comment on other blogs, I always receive a reply in my email. Well, when I receive comments on this little blog of mine, I click the reply button right below each persons comment and comment that way thinking that my reader way getting an email about my response. Finds out I've been doing it all wrong!

I feel awful because I feel like my readers haven't had a real opportunity to interact with me now that I've learned this! I always reply to every comment but I didn't realize that the original commenter wasn't aware of my response! Now I have my comments set up to where they will be emailed to me so I can actually respond to each and every one of your comments and you'll be aware that I am not ignoring your comments! I love hearing from my readers!!

I guess ya learn something new everyday, right?!

Anyways, I don't know about you darlings but I am currently obsessed with all of the photos of fall fashion in my Pinterest feed! I want, no, need, a vest! The J.Crew Herringbone Vest is definitely on my Christmas list this year. What is your favorite fall look?

Fall Style: What to Wear to Class

What sorority woman doesn't love to look polished for class?!
One of my favorite outfits is my striped button up paired with skinny jeans, riding boots, pearls, and a bow in my hair, of course! Bow hair clips are the perfect way to keep my bangs out of my face when I need to study.

Rika, the owner of Republic of Pigtails, sent me this adorable yellow hair bow last week and I may or may not be totally obsessed with it...ok, ok, I definitely am! I love how it's different from all of my other bows with the second smaller gold bow accent! Each of Rika's hair bows are handmade from salvaged materials and each bow is unique! Rika believes that no two pieces should be identical, as the people who wear them are unique in their own way!

Rika started her business after being inspired by her daughter, her daughter's friends, and their stylish moms! I found a lot of the styles to be geared more towards kids or a little over the top but that won't stop me from loving the Simone hair clip (the one I'm wearing and totally obsessed with!).

What do you think of hair bows, Darlings?
